The Impact of Names
If you want to be make more of an effect when you are talking to people make sure to use their name. You would be surprised what kind of effect it has on the person when you mention their name. I know it may seem as something useless because of how often we use names. However it’s psychological impacts are great not to mention that they have to do not just with psychology but also with manners. Yup manners play a big role in getting acquainted with a person.
Let’s talk real world scenarios have you ever been called another name by someone who you just talked with and you introduced yourself to ? If you have how did make you feel? I bet it made you feel like the other person wasn’t paying attention to what your were saying not just that it comes of rude and a lack of manners. On top of it all it makes you feel unimportant whenever someone says your name wrong or can’t remember it. That’s why it is so important to be able to remember and use the correct name that belongs to a person.
Now for the positive effects using the correct name has its many rewards. Just as it can make you seem uninterested, rude and manner less it can make you seem attentive, courteous and appreciative. See the thing with names is that we attach them to an identity this means that we view our name as part of ourselves and this means that anything that is part of us is important to us. Along those lines we tend to be pretty selfish and what we like to worry about is ourselves so when you say someone’s name it makes them feel important. So much so that people have gone through great lengths to have their names known to the world. That’s why you see so many small business and corporations named after the owners of business. Simply put, it feeds the ego.
Knowing that though you can use it not just in person when you’re talking to someone but it can be used in letters, products and gifts to make others feel better and more enticed to want the product. It’s actually pretty amazing how this technique works and it’s so simple at that. I can’t tell you how many owners of businesses I have been able to talk to because I just knew their names. I’ve also done the opposite where I missed pronounced someone’s name and I could tell right in their eyes they were looking at me like an idiot.
Long story short if you want to persuade and make people feel comfortable make sure to use their name it’s a little tactic that can take you very far.
