5 Mistakes To Avoid with First Clients

When you first start a business no one tells you what things are suppose to be like or how you should act or what you should do. So along the way you make many mistakes that will set your business back or may even destroy it if you're not careful enough. Coming from experience I want to talk about some of the mistakes to avoid in order to keep your business running smoothly so you don't have to go through the embarrassment of letting your clients down. Here are some of the things to avoid and what to do instead.

  1. Too Many Clients Can Be A Bad Thing-  One of the things no one ever talks about is having too many clients early in you business can be a bad thing. The reason to begin with is that this happens because you want quick money. I get it, why go into business if you're not going to make money right? Well, that's where the conflict begins if you're just looking for the money you're basically willing to work and accept anyone. Then as a result you end up having way too many clients and can't handle the work. Ultimately, ending up in failure and letting done your clients as you cannot deliver to them. So it's better to take it easy and work with one client till you know that you can handle more. Remember it's all about quality over quantity the higher the value you deliver the more you will make.
  2. Silence is a Killer- If you're in the service industry make sure to constantly keep in touch with your clients. When I first started there was times when I wouldn't talk with clients for a couple of months only when I needed to pick up a check. This is a big "No". If you only get in contact to pick up a check your clients might start to resent that you do not really care about their well being and they might start to resent that. So make sure to constantly stay in touch with them treat them as family or friends and make sure they're always happy. By doing this you will ensure you have a lasting business relationship and they will even send more business your way because they like you.
  3. Stay True to Your Word- This may be a given but on your quest for money your visions and priorities can get skewed. If you say you can do something make sure you can deliver on it. In this scenario your word is gold if you say something your client is trusting you to be able to do it and if you cannot you are in big trouble. This is super important as you have a reputation that precedes you which can not only your current business, but your future business as well you'd be surprised how fast word of mouth can travel . So don't look for the quick money and know the capabilities of your business be honest there is no shame in not being able to not do something. Stay true to your word.
  4.  Charge Accordingly- Too many times we are way hungry to get our first clients and end up under charging for our work. As a result we end up doing way too much work for not enough pay. This could lead you to be unmotivated which will lead to a decline in the quality of your work. If this happens the client will notice and will address you on it causing friction and tension between the two of you. This is no way to run a business neither side wins when this happens. So it's much better for you to charge a sufficient amount that will keep you motivated and that will provide enough value for the client.
  5. Choose your Clients- Not everyone is going to be a fit for your business so chooses who you want to work with. It is much easier to get along with someone who is workable then someone who is constantly gonna grind you or is unsatisfied with everything you do. If you work with the second type of client then your performance is gonna suffer so don't be hasty to work with anyone. Be patient and make sure you have a good feeling about your clients when you first meet them. You can more or less tell how someone is after a first meeting. So don't let the hunger sway you into a deal or situation you are not okay with.
Being and entrepreneur is a big responsibility and is like a baby that you constantly have to be nurturing. Make sure to evade these mistakes it will save you a lot of time and will help you live a life where you can enjoy peace of mind.
